In our student life, we hear about the recruitments of, IAS Officer, IPS Officer, etc by UPSC. Some of us know about it some are not.
So, today here in this article, we are going to discuss what is UPSC? A brief history of UPSC. 

What is UPSC?

The Union Public Service Commission is commonly known as UPSC. It is India's premier central recruitment agency to conducts the recruitment into the services like IAS, IPS, IFS, etc and the examination like Civil Service Exam for all Indian (group A & group B) of central service, while the department of personal and training is the central personal agency in India.

It advises the Government of India for various matters related to appointments, transfer, promotion, etc. This organization's charter is granted by Part XIV of the Constitution of India, titled Services Under the Union and the States.

A Brief History of UPSC.

Early in the establishment, UPSC was known as the Public Service Commission of India. It is established on 1st October 1926, by the British Parliament of the United Kingdom. It consists of four members in addition to the Chairman, Sir Ross Barker, a member of the Home Civil Service of the United Kingdom was the First Chairman of the Commission.

In terms of the provisions of the Government of Indian Act, 1935, and with its coming into effect on 1st April 1937, The Public Service Commission became the Federal Public Service Commission.

After Independence with the inauguration of the Constitution of India on January 26, 1950, the Federal Public Service Commission came to known as the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). At that time the Chairman was H.K. Kripalini (April 1, 1947- January 13, 1949).

It was 1864, the first Indian, Shri Satyendranath Tagore (brother of Asian's 1st Nobel laureates Shri Rabindranath Tagore), succeeded in Indian Civil Service Examination. Three years later 4 other Indians succeed.

Note:
            1. Article  315 of the Indian Constitution deals with Public Service Commissions.
            2. Article 316 deals with the appointment and term of office of members.
